Tara did not like Randall, especially when he came barging into her shop making threats to her. Part of her wanted to believe he was the killer just because he was so despicable.
Despite those feelings, however, she wondered if the man could be the killer. It seemed so odd to think that the man would kill Chris when he wanted to get money from him.
âThatâs a good point, actually. What would be his motive? He canât very well demand an insurance payment for an illegally distributed drug payment. Thatâll just make more trouble for him than simply accepting the loss.â
Tara began to consider the possibility of him attacking Tonya or Emma in order to get the money.
âWould he go to such trouble to get the money Chris owed him?â
âMeow,â came the voice of Athena.
Tara snapped out of her thoughts and looked at the cat, standing on the counter, watching her.
âSorry, Athena,â she apologized. âIâm just confused about what Randallâs motive would be. Seems to me, he mightâve lacked a motive, actually. I mean, maybe Iâm just targeting him because heâs a drug dealer and an easy target.â
The cat responded by starting to pace back and forth on the counter, deep in thought. Tara could tell she seemed to agree with her assessment. However, both of them were hesitant to draw conclusions.
âThe reading we just had seemed to signify that there were too many illusions and distractions in place to make decisions,â she said to the cat. âJust as I start to analyze one potential killer, another jumps in front of me.â
When she suspected Randall, the newspaper showed the death of Glenda to make her feel like Tonya or Emma might have access to morphine. Then, Becky was arrested for stealing morphine from the hospital.
âAll of these potential killers seem to be a distraction. It feels like I canât make a decision or determine which of these people has the strongest motive.â
Tara looked up from where she had been staring down the wooden counter and realized Athena had gone to the door. She seemed determined to get out, but Tara didnât know what for.
âWhat is it, Athena?â she called out to the cat. Athena didnât answer directly, but just kept pushing on the door. Tara let out a sigh.
âAlright, we can go out,â Tara sighed. âI can tell Iâm not getting anything done today. We might as well go for a walk.â
She threw on her coat and shoes and carried Athena out the door. She placed a sign on the door explaining she went out for lunch.
Athena jumped from her arms and started to walk briskly down the road. That wasnât normal for her. Normally, the cat insisted on being carried, walking slowly, or riding on Taraâs shoulders.
Tara locked the door and dashed after her determined cat. Taraâs spirit rose as the cat led her through the busy town streets.
âMaybe Athena knows something! Maybe she found something and needs to show me something. Oh, please, let that be!â
However, after meandering through the streets for an hour, Athena stopped in front of the fish stand.
